Aug 2006 – Present Perceptive Informatics/PAREXEL (ex Clinphone PLC) Nottingham

  • Systems Engineer (UNIX/Oracle Team – RTSM Infrastructure)

    Part of the Global Hosting support team managing the companies' infrastructure, comprising of two sites with fully resilient capabilities. Ensuring 99.9% uptime which equates to unplanned outages below 10 hours.

    Member of the RTSM infrastructure team responsible for core Perceptive clinical trials and integration platforms; these are 24/7 client facing systems based on AIX, VMWare, Oracle, RHEL, Tibco, Informatica, IBM Tivoli, IBM WebSphere, DB2 and Microsoft technologies.

    • Managing a 50+ node ESXi cluster split across two physical datacentres with over 1500 VM servers hosted.
    • Capacity Planning and provisioning new VMs and ESXi hosts
    • Deployment and Management of VMDR backup appliances for DR purposes
    • Management of multiple IBM Power6/7+ servers providing 30+ LPARs running AIX with Oracle 10g and IB WebFOCUS server clusters in a highly available configuration
    • Providing validation and support documentation for systems within the RTSM Infrastructure team.
    • Day-to-day systems support and maintaining data centre infrastructure including participating in on-call rota
    • Responsible for managing and providing yearly Business Continuity Plan/Disaster Recovery documentation and testing for audit purposes

    Technical resource for the delivery of a major Data Centre relocation project, This involved the installation or migration of all servers providing core Perceptive 24/7 client-facing systems from Nottingham into a global IAAS environment hosted in our Tier IV Data Centres in Berlin, Germany and Billerica, USA. Key details of this highly complex, large-scale project comprised:

    • Migration of 15 server networks from Nottingham.
    • Move of central telecoms hub from Nottingham to Berlin.
    • Provision or migration of all virtual machines across our core client-facing systems.
    • Migration of 75+ TB of data across countries.
    • Core IVR services on the day of migration were restored ahead of schedule with study data integrity completely intact.

    Support and maintenance of Data Centre Systems, Rolling out software to Desktop clients and remote Citrix users. Managing the storage of client project data and looking after the IBM TSM Backup systems. Actively monitoring systems health and identifying any potential bottlenecks. Blackberry Enterprise Server administration, Documentation for updates to systems and validation/testing of new hardware. Liaising with 1st and 2nd line support teams as well as external vendors.

    Remote support of school networks and Field service/repair of everything from desktop PCs and Servers to Printer and POS equipment.

    Managing the IT/Network for a Community Resource centre, two IT rooms used for web browsing and E-learning courses. later being seconded by West Notts College for support of ~10 external adult learning centres using VPN technology to link with the main college network. Delivering training on the Internet/PC Use to community groups and private bookings. Staff Training, Stock Control and basic accounting/banking of daily takings.
